An Intruder's Scent
Tears blurred Kaelith’s vision, thick and hot, as she wrapped her arms around Junia in the cramped, damp alleyway behind her old apartment. The cool autumn air of Silverlake felt biting against her skin, a stark contrast to the suffocating heat of the emotion clogging her throat. It was really happening. She was leaving behind the only place that had offered her a semblance of peace, and the only friend who had ever truly known her.
"You promise to call me as soon as you're settled?" Junia whispered against her shoulder, her voice thick and trembling. She was trying desperately to hold it together, but her shoulders shook slightly under Kaelith's grip.
"I promise," Kaelith murmured, squeezing her friend as tightly as she could, wishing she could lock this moment in her memory forever. "I'll call you the second I get there. I won't make you wait."
"No, not just a normal call—a video call!" Junia demanded, pulling back slightly and wiping a stray tear from Kaelith's cheek with her thumb. She blinked rapidly, batting her long eyelashes to keep the fresh moisture from escaping her eyes. "I want to see the new digs. I want to make sure this big, scary Lycan is keeping you in the style you deserve. If there isn't a walk-in closet and a king-sized bed, I'm personally coming to rescue you."
Kaelith let out a watery laugh and gripped her in another tight hug, burying her face in Junia's neck. She inhaled the familiar, comforting scent of laundry detergent and cheap lavender body spray—a scent that had spelled safety for her for so long. Slowly, she stepped back, letting Torin wrap his strong arms around Junia’s shoulders to comfort her.
"I’ll look after her, Kae. Don’t you worry about a thing," Torin said, offering a warm, reassuring smile as he pressed a small, affectionate kiss to the top of Junia’s messy hair.
"You better," Kaelith warned, trying to keep her voice steady. "And please, stay out of trouble, Torin. And stay far, far away from..."
"Debbie, I know, I know," Torin said with a playful, easy grin that instantly lightened the heavy atmosphere.
Kaelith wanted to hug him goodbye too, but as she moved, both she and Torin instinctively glanced over toward the edge of the alley.
Graeven was leaning back against his sleek, dark Mustang, his thick arms folded over his broad chest. His imposing, massive figure practically swallowed the dim light of the alleyway, his dark eyes narrowed to slits as he stared directly at the male wolf. The air between the two males crackled with an unspoken, territorial tension. Graeven's wolf was highly sensitive to any other male in Kaelith's vicinity, even one who was clearly mated to someone else.
"Get out of here," Torin whispered under his breath, his eyes wide as he adjusted his collar and took a visible gulp. "Before your fated-mate decides to shred me into dog food right here in the dirt."
Kaelith couldn't help but let out a soft laugh at Torin's dramatic reaction. "Fuck it," she muttered. She bypassed her own hesitation and stepped forward, pushing Junia gently aside so she could wrap her arms around Torin’s neck.
Torin let out a low chuckle and hugged her back tightly, his arms locking around her waist for a brief, friendly second.
Almost instantly, a low, menacing rumble vibrated through the alley. Graeven had straightened up, his heavy boots clicking sharply against the damp pavement as he began to approach them. The possessive aura radiating off the massive Lycan was thick enough to choke on. His dark eyes flared with a primal heat, his jaw clenching tightly.
"Don’t let him push you around, Little Fox," Torin whispered quickly into her ear, keeping his voice barely audible. "You’re a strong, fiery firecracker. Set his whole damn world on fire, okay?"
Before Kaelith could answer, Graeven’s large, calloused hand reached out and firmly but gently pulled her away. He wrapped his thick, muscular arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side in a vice-like, possessive grip.
Kaelith wiped the remaining tears from her face, deliberately ignoring the way her fated-mate's fists were flexing at his sides. She could feel the raw, violent urge rolling off Graeven, his wolf practically screaming to beat Torin into the asphalt for daring to touch what belonged to him.
To calm him, Kaelith reached up and placed her hand over his, squeezing his large fingers and gently tracing her thumb over his knuckles. The effect was immediate. The iron-hard muscles in Graeven’s shoulder relaxed under her touch, his shallow, angry breathing slowing down. *Well, that’s a neat trick,* she thought, a small sense of wonder cutting through her grief. Her touch was a soothing balm to his wild, possessive beast.
Torin pulled Junia back into his side, his arm resting protectively around her waist. "Go on, Tiny," he said, offering a warm but respectful nod. "Get out of here. Give us a call anytime you need us. And you," he added, lifting his chin to look Graeven dead in the eye. The hostile tension flared for a split second before Torin’s expression faded into a look of solemn, respectful acceptance. "You’re a lucky man. Don’t *ever* take her for granted."
Graeven stared at the young wolf for a long, silent moment before giving a single, firm nod. He looked down at Kaelith, the fierce, protective anger in his eyes melting into pure, liquid warmth. "Come on, Baby. Let's go home."
He took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers, and led her to the passenger side of the Mustang. He held the heavy door open for her. Kaelith stepped up, pausing on the threshold to turn back to her friends. Junia waved both hands frantically, her eyes red, and Torin gave her a gentle, encouraging shooing motion.
She sank down into the plush leather seat, allowing Graeven to softly close the door, sealing her inside the quiet, luxurious cabin. She rolled the window down as Graeven rounded the hood, his powerful movements effortless and fluid. He slid into the driver's seat and turned the key. The massive engine purred to life with a deep, rumbling roar that vibrated through Kaelith's very bones.
Outside, Junia was dramatically fanning her face with her hand, silently mouthing the word "*hot*" with a playful wink. Kaelith rolled her eyes and smiled, her heart swelling with a mixture of sadness and affection.
She felt Graeven’s hand find hers again, his large fingers squeezing gently. She pulled her gaze away from her friends to look at him. He brought her hand up to his lips, kissing the knuckles with lingering softness, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"Are you ready?" he asked, his deep, resonant voice offering her one last chance to say goodbye, to pause, to breathe.
Fresh tears welled in her eyes, but she swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. "Yes. I'm ready."
He pulled her hand down, resting it on his lap, and used his free hand to shift the car into drive. The Mustang drifted forward, leaving the damp alley behind. Kaelith kept her head turned, watching her friends in the side mirror. Their bright, supportive smiles quickly faded into the distance, becoming too small to make out. As they turned the corner onto the main highway, Kaelith silently said goodbye to her old life and looked forward to the terrifying, beautiful unknown.
The city of Silverlake gradually dissolved behind them, replaced by the sprawling, untamed beauty of the mountain highway. Towering pines lined the road like silent sentinels, their dark green branches dusted with the afternoon mist. The air filtering through the car’s vents grew crisper, carrying the scent of damp earth, pine, and incoming rain.
Kaelith stared out the passenger window, her mind racing with a million different thoughts. The silence in the car wasn't tense, but it was heavy with the weight of her transition. She was a Lycan, a creature of myth, and she was heading into the heart of a powerful pack with her fated-mate—a man she barely knew, but whose presence called to her very soul.
"I may have an awkward question for you," Kaelith said quietly, keeping her eyes trained on the blur of green and gray outside.
"What’s that, sweetheart?" Graeven asked. His voice was a low, comforting hum that seemed to vibrate through the leather seat. He kept his eyes on the winding road, but his thumb gently caressed the back of her hand, keeping her grounded.
"Um... Lycans live a very long time, right?" Kaelith asked, turning her head slightly to gauge his reaction.
A soft, knowing smile played on Graeven’s lips, but he kept his gaze focused on the highway ahead. "Yes, we do. There’s a common misconception among humans and even standard werewolves that we’re completely immortal. We’re not. We just live significantly longer than most. Our cellular regeneration is incredibly advanced, which means we age, too, just much, much slower than humans do," he explained, his tone patient and reassuring.
Kaelith swallowed hard, her anxiety bubbling up as she tried to calculate the potential age difference. "So, um... how old..."
"I’m thirty-two," he answered, glancing over at her with a humorous, boyish grin that creased the corners of his dark eyes.
Kaelith let out a massive, heavy breath of relief, her shoulders dropping so suddenly that the tension practically drained from her body.
Graeven burst out laughing, the rich, deep sound filling the car and warming the cool air of the cabin. "What?" Graeven teased, shaking his head. "What would you have done if I said I was three hundred and twenty-seven, huh? Would that have been a dealbreaker for you, Little Fox?"
Kaelith studied his sharp, rugged jawline, the faint shadow of stubble along his cheeks, and the genuine amusement in his eyes. A fierce blush rushed up her neck, coloring her cheeks a deep, burning crimson. *No,* she thought to herself, *honestly, the thought wouldn’t have changed a single thing.* But she wasn't about to tell him that.
"How far is the Blackwood territory?" she asked, quickly changing the subject before her thoughts could wander into dangerous, highly embarrassing territory.
He played with her fingers, lightly tracing the contours of her hand. "About an hour and a half to my house from the city limits. We have to go deep into the mountains where the pack is established."
"Really?" Kaelith's brow furrowed. "I thought the Blackwood pack was much closer, just outside of the city?" Kaelith had chosen Silverlake specifically because she believed the Lycans were close enough to offer a passive shield of safety, but far enough to let her live in peace. Was the packhouse really that deep in the mountains? Was she truly safe out here, or was she completely isolated?
"The first gate is about fifteen minutes out," Graeven explained.
"The *first* gate?" she asked, her curiosity piqued as she studied his handsome profile in the soft afternoon light.
He glanced her way, his smile widening as he noticed her intense gaze. "There are three," he whispered, bringing her hand to his lips once more, pressing a lingering kiss to her skin while maintaining unbroken, intense eye contact. "There’s no escaping me now, Kaelith."
She let out a mock scoff before a genuine smile broke through her defenses. Maybe Junia had been right. Surely *he*—the monster from her past—couldn’t possibly breach three heavily fortified, high-security border gates guarded by a lethal pack of Lycans just to drag her back?
But as the thought crossed her mind, Kaelith’s free hand reflexively drifted down, her fingers lightly touching the inside of her thigh. Beneath her denim jeans, her skin held a secret she was terrified to share. A mark of ownership from a man she had fled, a dark past that she knew would eventually catch up to her. She looked back over at Graeven, who was smiling as he watched the road, completely oblivious to the sudden spike of fear in her chest.
*I have to tell him soon,* she realized, a cold dread settling in her stomach. *I have to tell him, or he’s going to find out on his own, and when he does... will he still want me? Or will he throw me to the wolves?*
She shook her head, forcing herself to stop spiraling. She didn't want to ruin the peace of this drive. She looked forward down the road, watching as the massive, imposing iron structures of the first Blackwood border gate loomed in the distance, guarded by armed Lycans in tactical gear.
Nearly two hours later, the Mustang turned off the main mountain highway and onto a narrow, private gravel road flanked by ancient, towering pines. The dense canopy overhead filtered the afternoon sun, casting long, dancing shadows across the hood of the car. The sense of isolation was absolute, but instead of fear, Kaelith felt a strange sense of peace settling over her.
Graeven steered the car around a final bend, and the trees cleared to reveal a charming, one-story stone cottage. Ivy crawled lazily up one side of the rustic gray stone, and several stained-glass windows sparkled in the light. A wide, inviting front porch stretched across the front of the house, complete with a wooden swing and a couple of hand-carved chairs. It looked like a peaceful sanctuary hidden away from the rest of the world.
Kaelith stepped out of the car, the crisp, clean mountain air immediately filling her lungs. It smelled of pine, damp earth, and rain—so different from the smog and noise of Silverlake. She waited by the passenger door as Graeven retrieved her bags from the trunk, his movements smooth and powerful.
He slung her heavy duffel bag over his broad shoulder and gestured toward the cobblestone path leading to the porch. "Go ahead, sweetheart."
"You don't live in the main packhouse?" Kaelith asked as they walked up the uneven stone steps, her boots clicking softly against the rock.
"I like my privacy," Graeven replied, his deep voice quiet. "And when I'm with you, I don't want an entire pack of nosy Lycans interrupting us."
A warm tingle ran down Kaelith’s spine at his words. Graeven placed a large, warm hand on the small of her back, the heat of his palm radiating through her clothes as he unlocked the heavy wooden front door.
He stepped inside first to set her bags down, but the moment his boots crossed the threshold, Kaelith saw his entire body go completely rigid. His broad shoulders locked, his head snapping up as his nostrils flared, inhaling the air.
Kaelith stepped in behind him, looking around the interior. It was absolutely beautiful—warm, polished wood floors, a massive stone fireplace in the living room, and rustic, tasteful furniture. It felt like walking into a cozy, magical cabin hidden deep in the forest.
But as she took a deep breath, expecting to inhale the comforting scent of her fated-mate—the familiar blend of cedarwood, rich leather, and fresh rain—she froze mid-breath.
A thick, sickeningly sweet odor invaded her nostrils. It was a cloying, sugary scent, heavy with the unmistakable musk of an aroused female Lycan.
Instantly, the hairs on Kaelith's arms stood straight up. A sudden, violent wave of heat surged through her veins, and before she could even comprehend the reaction, a low, savage growl vibrated deep within her chest. It was a sound so raw, so violently territorial, that it shocked her.
In the back of her mind, she could hear Graeven's voice, tense and urgent, trying to stop her. "Kaelith, wait—"
But she ignored him. Her wolf was clawing at the surface, screaming in primal outrage. She stalked forward, her feet moving on pure instinct as she followed the offensive scent down the short hallway toward the master bedroom.
Kaelith slammed her hand against the heavy wooden door of the bedroom, pushing it open with a sharp creak.
The sight inside made her entire world grind to a halt.
Draped lazily across the rumpled linen sheets of Graeven's bed was a striking, beautiful Lycan woman. She was completely, utterly naked.
The woman had long, dark hair that fell over her pale, bare shoulders. She lay on her side, her bare, round breasts fully exposed to the open air, her dark nipples pert and erect. Her long, smooth thighs were draped carelessly over the side of the bed, slightly parted to reveal the soft, dark hair of her pubic region. An intricate, dark tattoo wove up her leg, wrapping around her hip before disappearing behind her back.
The woman—Aramina—looked up as the door crashed open. A smug smirk played on her lips for a fraction of a second, but the moment Graeven stepped into the room behind Kaelith, her expression shifted instantly.
She sat up, holding a corner of the top sheet over her breasts in a show of feigned shock and deep, dramatic hurt, though she made no real effort to cover the rest of her exposed body.
"Grae?" Aramina asked, her voice dripping with artificial innocence. "Who is this girl?"
A sharp, physical wave of pain pierced Kaelith’s chest, so intense she gasped. It felt like a physical blade slicing through her heart. *He lied,* the voice in her head screamed. *He has a girlfriend. He brought you here to be his side piece, or maybe he was just using you.*
Humiliation, hot and suffocating, rushed through her veins. Tears of rage and betrayal stung her eyes. She couldn't breathe. She turned on her heel, desperate to flee the house, to run back down the mountain, back to the safety of her quiet, lonely life in Silverlake.
But before she could take a step, Graeven’s hand clamped around her upper arm in a tight, unyielding grip.
"Let me go!" she choked out, struggling against his hold.
"No," Graeven growled, his voice deep, vibrating with a terrifying rage. But his eyes weren't on Kaelith; they were locked onto the naked woman on his bed.
"Aramina, what the actual fuck are you doing here?" he snarled, his voice dropping into a register that made the floorboards beneath their feet vibrate.
"I... I don't understand," Aramina whimpered, her fake doubt laced with a trembling pout. "You've been gone for days, Grae. I thought... I thought you'd be happy to come home to your girlfriend. Who is this girl you brought into our space?"
The word *girlfriend* rang like a death knell in Kaelith's ears. She thrashed against Graeven's grip, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She didn't want to be here for this. She didn't want to hear the explanations, the lies, the excuses.
"You are *not* my girlfriend," Graeven roared, his voice deafening in the enclosed space. "You never have been. How the hell did you get into my house?"
"You gave me a key, remember?" Aramina said, her voice turning slightly defensive as she sat up further, letting the sheet slip down to reveal the full swell of her naked breasts. "Why are you being like this? Are you seriously going to pretend we're nothing because of her?"
"Get the hell out of my house," Graeven ordered, his voice dangerously quiet now.
Then, he did something that made the air in the room turn to ice.
He unleashed his dominant, Alpha-blood aura.
It wasn't just a psychological pressure; it was a physical force. The air grew incredibly heavy, suffocatingly dense. The stained-glass windows in the bedroom rattled violently in their lead frames. The sheer weight of his power slammed into Kaelith, her knees buckling instantly. She would have collapsed to the floor if Graeven’s grip on her arm hadn't kept her upright.
Even Aramina lost her smug expression, her pale face turning ghostly white as she recoiled against the headboard, trembling under the crushing weight of his fury.
"Out," Graeven repeated, the word carrying the absolute command of an Alpha. "Now."
Aramina scrambled out of the bed, her bravado completely shattered. But as she stood, a malicious glint returned to her dark eyes.
"Leave the sheet," Graeven commanded coldly.
With a spiteful, mocking smirk, Aramina let the bedsheet drop to the floor. She stood completely naked, just inches away from Kaelith. She purposefully paused, flaunting her body—her bare, full breasts, her narrow waist, her rounded hips, and the intricate, dark tattoos that wrapped around her thighs and wove up her spine.
She leaned in close to Kaelith, letting her cloying, sugary scent wash over her. "I'll see you tomorrow, Grae," she purred.
She offered Kaelith a mocking, superior wink, then sauntered out of the room, completely unbothered by her nudity as she walked down the hallway and out the front door, leaving the heavy, suffocating scent of her presence clinging to every inch of the room.
The heavy, cloying scent of the rival female remained, hanging in the air like a poisonous fog.
Kaelith's breathing became ragged, her chest heaving as she tried to draw in oxygen, but every breath only filled her lungs with Aramina's lingering scent.
Her wolf was screaming inside her head, a chaotic, feral storm of possessive rage and territorial jealousy. The thought of another woman in Graeven's bed—naked, touching his things, claiming to be his—triggered a primal reaction she had no idea how to control.
Her skin began to crawl, a frantic, tingling sensation spreading across her arms and chest. The humiliation was a physical weight, pressing down on her throat, making it impossible to swallow.
She felt her vision begin to tunnel. The edges of her sight went completely dark, narrowing until she could only see the empty, disheveled bed. Then, the tunnel snapped wide open, a blinding flash of light making her head spin, before narrowing again.
"Kaelith... Kaelith, look at me."
Graeven's voice sounded like it was coming from underwater, muffled and distant. She could see his lips moving, his handsome face etched with pure terror and regret, but she couldn't process his words.
The nausea hit her next, a violent, sickening wave that made her stomach churn. She felt her knees giving out again, her body trembling so violently she couldn't stand. She was suffocating. She was going to die here, choked to death by the scent of another female.
Each ragged, shallow breath brought her closer to the absolute brink of a total physical collapse. Her heart was beating so fast it felt like it would burst through her ribs.
Just as her knees finally gave way and the darkness threatened to swallow her whole, a pair of warm, firm, incredibly large hands cupped her cheeks, tilting her face upward.
The instant his skin made contact with hers, a shockwave of warmth rippled through her body, and her mind went entirely blank.
