Rejection and Banishment
Valerie’s POV
The darkness didn't fade gently. It shattered.
"No!" I screamed the word, my lungs burning as I bolted upright in bed. My heart was a frantic bird trapped in a cage of ribs, hammering so hard it made my vision pulse. For a heartbeat, I didn't know where I was. Then, the ceiling of my bedroom came into focus—the familiar dark oak beams, the heavy velvet curtains—and with it came the tidal wave of memory.
Declan. Lydia. The study.
The scent of their combined musk, the sight of my best friend’s violet dress hiked up to her waist, and the sound of the man I loved telling her he was tired of hiding their bond. It hit me like a physical blow to the stomach, knocking the breath right out of my body. I doubled over, clutching my head as a sharp, rhythmic throbbing began behind my eyes. It felt like someone was driving a rusted nail into my skull with every beat of my heart.
"My Goddess, Luna, you are awake!"
The voice was frantic. I looked up through a blur of pain to see Selina, my personal maid, rushing toward the bed. She dropped a wooden bucket of water, the liquid splashing across the stone floor, but she didn't seem to care. Her face was pale, her eyes rimmed with red, and her hair was a mess.
"What…" I tried to speak, but my throat was a desert. It felt like I’d swallowed a handful of glass. I coughed, the movement sending fresh jolts of agony through my torso. "What happened, Selina? How long have I been here?"
Selina reached me, her hands hovering over mine, shaking. She looked like she wanted to hug me and push me back into the pillows at the same time. "Luna," she choked out, her voice breaking. "Congratulations. You... you are pregnant."
The world stopped. The ticking clock on the mantel, the sound of the wind outside, even the throb in my head—everything went silent.
"Pregnant?" I repeated. The word felt foreign, a sound that didn't belong in this nightmare. "What are you talking about? Who is pregnant?"
Maybe I had died. Maybe this was some cruel joke the Goddess played on souls who had been betrayed.
"The pack doctor came the night you fainted, Luna," Selina said, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. She took a shuddering breath, trying to steady herself. "She said you were pregnant. But you didn’t wake up. You’ve been unconscious for two full days. I thought… I thought you were gone. I thought the shock had killed you both."
Two days. I had been lying here, a dead weight, while my world crumbled.
My hand moved instinctively. It drifted down, past the silk of my nightgown, to rest over my lower abdomen. It was flat, unchanged, yet it felt different now. A heavy anchor of dread settled in my gut. Just three days ago, this news would have been the greatest blessing of my life. I would have run to Declan, I would have seen that bright, predatory smile of his, and we would have celebrated the future of the Pyreclaw Realm.
Now, the child felt like a secret I had to guard with my life. A secret from its own father.
"But it was only because of the pregnancy… the doctor said the stress and the shift in your hormones caused the collapse," Selina continued, wiping her face with her sleeve. "That’s a relief, at least. The pup is strong."
I stared at the wall, my mind racing. A pup. Declan’s pup. The man who had been fucking my best friend while I waited for him in our bed. The man who had probably been laughing at my "wolf-less" inadequacy for years.
"What happened that night, Selina? After I fell?" I forced the words out, my voice gaining a hard edge.
Selina’s expression shifted. She tried to offer a small, hopeful smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Alpha Declan… he successfully moved the transition forward. He is now the official, rightful owner of the Pyreclaw Realm. The transition is complete. Things are looking up for you, Luna. The stability will help you heal."
I felt a cold shiver go down my spine. The transition was complete. My father’s legacy, the land my bloodline had protected for generations, was now legally and fully in the hands of a traitor.
I pushed the covers back, the sudden movement making my head spin.
"Luna, no! You must rest!" Selina cried, reaching out to stop me.
"Where is he?" I demanded, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. My muscles screamed in protest, feeling like they had turned to lead over the last forty-eight hours.
"He is in the study with the elders of the pack," she whispered, her voice filled with apprehension. "They’ve been in there for hours. They’re discussing the new administration."
I didn't wait to hear more. I stood up, and for a second, the room tilted dangerously. I gripped the bedpost until the wood bit into my palm, forcing the nausea down. I had to see him. I had to look into his eyes and see if there was a single shred of the man I had loved for seven years left, or if he had truly been a monster all along.
I ignored Selina’s pleas as I walked out of the room. My bare feet were silent on the cold stone of the hallway. Every step was a struggle, my body feeling fragile, like a glass vessel filled with boiling water. As I approached the wing that housed the Alpha’s study, the air grew heavy. The scent of cedar and old parchment—Declan’s scent—usually brought me comfort. Now, it made me want to vomit.
I slowed down as I reached the heavy oak doors. I could hear voices muffled through the wood. They weren't discussing taxes or border patrols.
"How could she be so brazen?" an old man’s voice hissed—Elder Thomas, a man who had known me since I was a child. "In our own territory? With rogues and commoners?"
"The evidence doesn't lie, Thomas," another voice replied, dripping with feigned disappointment. "To think we honored her as the daughter of the Great Alpha. She has brought nothing but shame to the Pyreclaw name."
"What do you mean this is our Luna?" a younger voice yelled, sounding outraged.
I froze, my hand hovering inches from the door handle. *Evidence? Shame?*
"As you can see for yourself," a calm, deep voice resonated through the door. It was Declan. It was the voice that had whispered 'I love you' into my ear every night for years. Now, it was as cold as a mountain grave. "This is the evidence I have received. I couldn't believe it myself, but the images speak louder than any denial."
My heart stopped. I didn't think; I reacted. I threw the doors open, the heavy wood crashing against the interior walls.
The room fell into a deathly silence.
The council of elders—six men who had once bowed to my father—were huddled around the large mahogany desk. They all turned to look at me, and I saw it instantly: the disgust, the pity, the loathing. They looked at me as if I were something scraped off the bottom of a boot.
"Valerie," Declan said. He was sitting in the Alpha’s chair—*my father’s chair*—with his legs crossed, looking every bit the king. His shirt was crisp, his hair perfectly styled, his eyes devoid of any warmth.
The whispers started immediately among the elders.
"Did she really do that?"
"Look at her... pretending to be the victim."
"No, the Luna isn’t like that... or is she? The pictures are so clear."
I ignored them, my gaze locked onto Declan. "What are you doing?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to stay strong. "What is this 'evidence' they’re talking about?"
Declan stood up slowly. His presence filled the room, the Alpha aura he had stolen from my lineage radiating off him in suffocating waves. "Enough," he commanded. The word was a physical weight, silencing the murmurs of the elders. "Leave. I want to speak to her alone."
The elders didn't hesitate. They filed out of the room, some of them deliberately brushing past me with sneers on their faces. Elder Thomas paused at the door, giving me one last look of pure disappointment before closing it behind him.
The click of the latch sounded like a guillotine.
We were alone. The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. Each tick felt like a countdown to my execution. I looked at Declan, searching for a crack in his mask. I wanted him to tell me that the night in the study was a hallucination. I wanted him to tell me he loved me. I wanted him to apologize.
Instead, he reached into a leather folder on the desk and pulled out a stack of glossy photographs. With a flick of his wrist, he threw them at my feet. They scattered across the dark floorboards like fallen leaves.
"How do you explain this?" he asked, his voice flat.
I looked down. For a moment, I couldn't process what I was seeing.
The first photo showed me—or a woman who looked exactly like me—lying naked on a bed, her back arched, her legs spread wide as a man I didn't recognize buried his face between her thighs.
I gasped, my knees going weak. I reached down and picked up another. In this one, I was on my knees, my mouth stretched wide around a thick, turgid cock, while another man stood behind me, his hands gripping my hair as he prepared to enter my ass. The details were graphic—the sheen of sweat on the skin, the flush of 'pleasure' on my face, the unmistakable birthmark on my hip.
My vision blurred. I flipped through the rest. Me in the woods, pinned against a tree by three different men. Me in a sordid hotel room, my body covered in fluids, my eyes rolled back in what looked like ecstasy.
I fell to the floor, my hands shaking so violently the pictures rattled against each other. "W-what is this? This isn't... I never..."
"You're asking me?" Declan scoffed. He walked around the desk, his boots heavy on the wood, and crouched down in front of me. He brought himself to my eye level, his scent of sandalwood and betrayal filling my senses. "You want to pretend to be innocent after all this? The elders have seen them. The pack will see them. They’ll know their Luna is nothing but a common whore who spent her nights in the beds of rogues while her husband worked to secure her future."
"No!" I screamed, the sound echoing off the high ceiling. "These are fakes! I’ve never seen these men! I’ve never been to these places! Declan, you know me! We’ve been together for seven years! How could you believe this?"
I looked into his eyes, desperate to find the man who had promised to protect me.
"Shh." He smirked, a cruel, mocking twist of his lips. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a low, intimate hiss. He put a finger to his lips, then suddenly reached out and grabbed a handful of my hair.
He yanked my head back with brutal force. I cried out, my neck straining as he forced me to look up at him. His eyes weren't the eyes of a lover; they were the eyes of a predator who had finally caught his prey.
"Oh, I know they're fakes, baby," he laughed. The sound was a jagged blade in my heart. He tightened his grip on my hair, pulling so hard I felt my scalp begin to tear. "You’re telling this to the person who commissioned them. I spent a lot of money making sure the editing was perfect. I even made sure they got the birthmark right."
He let out another laugh, the sound echoing in the cold room. "But that’s for you and me to know. To the rest of the world, you’re a disgraced slut."
"Why?" I choked out, tears finally streaming down my face. "How could you do this? You’re the one who betrayed me! I saw you with Lydia! I saw you in this very room, her on her knees between your legs! You accused me of infidelity while you were the one sleeping with my best friend all along!"
Declan snarled, his face contorting with rage. He shoved me away with a flick of his fingers, sending me sprawling back against the leg of the desk.
"Because I can, bitch," he spat, standing up and towering over me. The dangerous glint in his eyes was terrifying. "Lydia is my fated mate. She is the woman I was always meant to have. She has a wolf, she has power, she has fire. You?"
He looked at me with such pure disgust that it hurt more than his grip on my hair. "You’re a worthless, wolf-less embarrassment. I only had to mate with a pathetic creature like you because you were the dead Alpha’s only child. It was the only way to get the council to agree to the transition. I needed your bloodline to solidify my claim."
He paced in front of me, looking like a man who had finally shed a heavy, annoying skin. "But now? Now the Pyreclaw Realm is mine. I don't need the 'rightful heir' anymore. I need a Luna who can actually lead, a Luna who can give me heirs with powerful wolves."
He stopped and looked down at me, his expression shifting into that same kind, gentle smile he had used for seven years. It was more horrifying than the snarl. "But since we’ve known each other for a long time, I’ll give you a choice. We can do this the hard way, where I have you tried for treason and executed in front of the pack... or we can do this the easy way."
I shivered, my entire body convulsing. I knew what was coming. I could feel it in the air—the sudden, sharp ozone of a formal pack ceremony.
"I, Declan, Alpha of the Pyreclaw Realm, reject Valerie as my mate."
The words hit me like a physical explosion.
A sharp, agonizing pain gripped my chest, as if a hot iron had been plunged into my heart and twisted. It wasn't just emotional; it was the spiritual tether, the bond that linked our souls, being ripped out by the roots. I clutched my chest, gasping for air, falling onto my side on the floor. It felt like my very essence was being shredded.
"Say it back," Declan commanded, his voice devoid of mercy. "Renounce your title as Luna, and I’ll let you off with banishment. You can take your pathetic, wolf-less life and disappear. If you don't, I’ll let the pack decide what to do with a whore who betrayed her Alpha."
The pain was excruciating. It felt like my ribs were being crushed, like my lungs were filling with lead. I stared at the dark wood of the floor, my tears splashing onto the surface.
Seven years. I had given this man everything. I had supported him when the pack doubted him. I had loved him when he had nothing. I had sacrificed my own mourning for my father to ensure his transition was smooth. And this was the reward. To be framed, beaten, and discarded.
The idea of giving up, of just letting him kill me, flashed through my mind. It would be so easy to just stop breathing, to let the darkness take me again.
But then, I felt it.
A tiny, faint pulse deep within me.
The child.
If I told him now, would it change anything? I looked up at the man standing over me. No. He would see the baby as a threat to his new life with Lydia. He would see it as a stain on his 'perfect' future. He would kill me, and he would kill this child without a second thought. He had just admitted to framing me with pornographic images; he was capable of anything.
I had to survive. For the baby.
I swallowed my pride, my love, and the screaming agony in my soul. I forced myself to sit up, my movements jerky and uncoordinated. I wiped the tears from my eyes, staring him straight in the face. If this was the last time I looked at him, I wanted him to see that he hadn't completely broken me.
"I, Valerie..." my voice cracked, but I pushed through. "I, Valerie, reject Alpha Declan as my mate and... I renounce my title as Luna."
The moment the last word left my lips, I felt a sickening sensation of emptiness. It was as if a plug had been pulled at the base of my spine. The ancestral power of my father’s bloodline, the connection to the land that I had felt since I was a child, began to drain away. It was a cold, hollow feeling, leaving me more alone than I had ever been.
The bond was gone. The golden thread that had once shimmered between us in my mind's eye snapped and turned to ash.
I clenched my hands at my sides, the pain of the rejection still pulsing in my veins, but I forced myself to stand. I was weak, I was wolfless, and I was banished, but I was still the daughter of the Great Alpha.
Declan didn't look triumphant. He looked bored, as if he had just finished a tedious piece of paperwork.
"Pack your bags and leave silently tonight," he said, turning his back on me and walking toward the window. His voice was cold, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "And don’t think of doing anything stupid, Valerie. Don't try to talk to the elders, and don't try to stir up the pack. If you linger past nightfall, I will find you. And so help me, you’ll die by my hands."
I didn't answer. I couldn't.
I turned and walked out of the study, my legs feeling like they belonged to someone else. The hallway was empty, the shadows stretching long and jagged as the sun began to set. I had to get out. I had to get my child away from this monster.
As I reached the corner, I saw a flash of movement. Selina was waiting there, her face bruised and swollen, her eyes wide with terror.
My heart broke all over again. The nightmare was just beginning.
