The Princess Revealed

Alaric stood paralyzed, the world around him blurring into an indistinct haze of gold and white. His breath hitched in his throat, and for a moment, he forgot how to exhale. It was impossible. He had seen the reports from the border; he had seen the scorched earth and the bloodied remains of his rejection. Lyra was supposed to be dead. She was supposed to be a memory, a stain on his past that he had successfully scrubbed away.

But the woman standing before him was no ghost. She was vibrant, her skin glowing with a health she’d never possessed in the cold, damp corners of the Argent Edge Pack. She wore a gown of liquid silver that clung to her curves, shimmering like the surface of a moonlit lake. Her hair, once dull and brittle, now cascaded down her shoulders in a waterfall of silk.

“Alaric?” Selene’s voice pierced the silence, sharp and grating. She had finally caught up, her face flushed with exertion and annoyance. But as her gaze landed on the woman in front of them, the annoyance vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.

“You?” Selene’s voice rose to a shrill peak. “How are you still breathing?”

Lyra didn’t flinch. She didn’t shrink away as she once had. She stood with her chin tilted upward, her gaze cool and detached as she looked at them both like they were insects she had just discovered under a rock.

“Lyra?” Alaric finally found his voice, though it sounded like it was being dragged over broken glass. “Is it really you?”

“In the flesh,” Lyra said, her voice smooth and devoid of the tremor that used to define her. “Though you look like you’ve seen a phantom. Disappointed, Alaric? Did you expect me to stay in the dirt where you left me?”

Before Alaric could respond, Selene surged forward, her face contorting with a sudden, violent rage. The shock of seeing Lyra alive was quickly being overtaken by the realization that Lyra looked better, stronger, and more noble than Selene could ever hope to be. The jealousy was a physical thing, radiating off her in waves.

“You cunning bitch!” Selene shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Lyra. “How did you sneak in here? Did you crawl through the servant’s entrance? Or did you find some desperate rogue to fuck your way past the perimeter?”

The guards flanking the hallway shifted. Their hands moved to the hilts of their blades, their eyes narrowing into cold slits. The air in the corridor grew heavy, the pressure of their collective aura pressing down on the space.

Lyra merely raised an eyebrow, looking at Selene with genuine amusement. “Sneak in? You think I had to sneak into my own—" She stopped herself, a cold smirk playing on her lips. “You really haven't changed, Selene. Still loud, still bitter, and still remarkably stupid.”

“Don’t you dare talk to me like that!” Selene’s voice cracked. She turned to the guards, her eyes wild. “What are you standing there for? Arrest her! This is a party for Alphas and high-ranking nobles! This woman is a lowly, filthy commoner! She’s a disgrace, a reject! She was cast out of the Argent Edge Pack and spent the last six months as a rogue’s whore!”

The word *whore* echoed through the hallway. The silence that followed was deathly. The Astral Lune guards didn't move to arrest Lyra; instead, they began to close the circle, their movements predatory and synchronized.

Selene, blinded by her own venom, didn’t notice the danger. She stepped closer to Lyra, her face inches from the other woman’s. “How many of them was it, Lyra? How many mangy rogues had to pile onto you before you found a way to buy this dress? If I were you, I would have found a silver blade and ended it months ago out of pure shame. You disgusting tramp—”

*SLAP.*

The sound was like a gunshot.

Lyra’s hand moved with a speed that Alaric’s eyes could barely follow. It wasn't the desperate, weak swing of a victim. It was the calculated, powerful strike of a warrior. The force of the blow sent Selene reeling, her head snapping to the side as she stumbled back, clutching her cheek.

“Do not raise your voice in front of me,” Lyra said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal octave that sent a shiver of genuine fear down Alaric’s spine. “And certainly do not use that word again. Do you hear me?”

Selene stared at her, her eyes wide and watering. A bright red welt was already blossoming across her pale skin. She looked at Alaric, expecting him to roar in her defense, but Alaric was too busy staring at Lyra.

The Lyra he knew was wishy-washy. She was the girl who apologized for taking up space, who wept when he raised his voice, and who had begged for his mercy on the day he rejected her. This woman... this woman was made of steel and ice.

“You—you slapped me?” Selene whispered, her shock turning into a hysterical sob. “Alaric, she hit me! This commoner trash hit me!”

She lunged toward Lyra, her claws beginning to extend, her inner wolf snarling for blood. But she didn't get more than two steps.

Two of the Astral Lune guards moved like shadows. They seized Selene’s arms, their iron grips locking her in place. With a synchronized movement, they delivered a heavy kick to the back of her knees. Selene let out a sharp cry of pain as her legs gave way, forcing her down into a kneeling position on the hard quartz floor.

“Are you fucking insane?!” Selene screamed, thrashing against the guards. “Let me go! I am with Alpha Alaric! I am the future Luna of the Argent Edge Pack! You are committing an act of war by touching me!”

Alaric finally snapped out of his trance. The sight of his future mate being forced to her knees by common guards was an insult he couldn't ignore. He stepped forward, his Alpha aura flaring, though it felt strangely dampened in this hallway.

“Let her go,” Alaric commanded, his voice deep with authority. He glared at the guards, his eyes flashing with the golden light of his wolf. “Selene is my guest. She is under my protection. Release her now, and I might forget this insolence.”

The guards didn't even look at him. They remained as still as statues, their eyes fixed forward, their grip on Selene never wavering.

Lyra let out a soft, melodic chuckle. It was the most insulting sound Alaric had ever heard. She turned to the usher who had been following them, a man who was now bowing low, his forehead nearly touching his knees.

“Did you check their invitations?” Lyra asked.

The usher didn't dare look up. “Alpha Alaric’s name is on the guest list, my lady.”

“Just his name?” Lyra tilted her head, glancing down at the sobbing Selene. “What about this woman? Is she on the list?”

The usher swallowed hard. “I did not see her name, no.”

“Are you fucking deaf?” Selene shrieked, her face twisted with rage. “I told you—Alpha Alaric invited me! I am his plus-one! I don't need my own invitation!”

She looked up at Alaric, her eyes pleading. “Alaric, my love, are you going to let them treat me like a criminal? Tell them! Tell them who I am!”

Alaric’s jaw tightened. He looked at Lyra, his gaze icy. He hated the way she was looking at him—not with love, not with longing, but with a cold, clinical indifference. It galled him. He was an Alpha. He was her former mate. He was the man who had defined her world, and now she was looking at him like he was a stranger.

“Release Selene,” Alaric said, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl. “And I will let this slide. Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be, Lyra. You’re clearly in over your head here. I don’t know who you’ve tricked into letting you stay in this wing, but you need to remember your place.”

Lyra laughed again, and this time there was a sharp edge to it. “Let it slide? My place?” She stepped closer to him, her presence so commanding that Alaric found himself instinctively wanting to take a step back. “You seem to be confused, Alaric. This isn’t the Argent Edge Pack. You have no authority here. You are a guest in a house that doesn't want you, and I am certainly not your Luna anymore.”

She turned her back on him, dismissing him as if he were a servant. She looked at the guards holding Selene.

“This meeting is for Alphas and invited dignitaries only,” Lyra said, her voice echoing clearly down the long hallway. “The rules of the Astral Lune Pack are very clear: no uninvited plus-ones are allowed in the private residential wings. Since this woman is not on the list and has seen fit to verbally assault me in these halls... drag her out. Throw her into the street like the common trash she is.”

“No!” Selene screamed as the guards immediately began to drag her backward. Her heels skidded against the floor, making a screeching sound. “Alaric! Help me! You can't let them do this!”

Alaric’s blood boiled. He reached for his wolf, ready to shift and tear these guards apart, but before he could make a move, a heavy, suffocating pressure filled the hallway. It was an Alpha aura, but it was unlike anything Alaric had ever felt. It was ancient, vast, and utterly crushing.

The soldiers and servants in the hall immediately dropped to one knee, their heads bowed in total submission.

“If I can’t be here—” Selene’s voice failed her as the pressure hit her, her lungs struggling to draw air. She looked toward the end of the hall, her eyes widening in terror. “Then what are you still doing here? You aren't on any invitation either! You're a commoner! You're nothing!”

“Of course, she is,” a deep, resonant voice rumbled from the staircase.

Everyone turned. A man was descending the stairs, his movements fluid and full of a dangerous, predatory grace. He was tall, his shoulders broad, and his eyes—dark and piercing—were fixed squarely on Alaric. He wore a dark suit that seemed to absorb the light around him, and the air seemed to vibrate with his every step.

“Alpha Leander!” the guards shouted in unison, their voices echoing off the gold-leafed walls.

Leander didn't acknowledge them. He walked straight to Lyra’s side, his presence towering over everyone else in the room. He looked at the guards holding Selene, then at Alaric, his expression one of bored contempt.

“Your mistress has been making quite a scene in my home, Alpha Alaric,” Leander said. The silence in the hallway was absolute. “She has disrespected someone very dear to me. I want her apology. Right here. Right now. Or I will personally escort the Argent Edge Pack delegation to the border and ensure you are barred from every future meeting.”

Alaric’s heart plummeted. Being kicked out of the Annual Meeting would be a death blow to his pack’s reputation and political standing. It was a move of extreme aggression, especially considering Argent Edge was one of the five largest packs in the world. But looking into Leander’s eyes, Alaric knew the man wasn’t bluffing.

“Are you serious, Alpha Leander?” Alaric gritted his teeth, his pride screaming at him to fight back. “Lyra slapped Selene first. Selene is a noble, a member of my inner circle. Lyra is a commoner. She’s a girl from my pack who was exiled for her own failures. If anyone needs to apologize, it is her. You are being deceived by a woman who knows how to play a part.”

Leander didn’t look angry. Instead, he burst into a short, mocking laugh that felt like a slap to Alaric’s face.

“Commoner?” Leander shook his head, his eyes glinting with a dark, triumphant light. “Who told you Lyra was a commoner?”

He reached out, wrapping a protective arm around Lyra’s shoulders and pulling her close to his side. Lyra didn’t pull away; she leaned into him, her gaze meeting Alaric’s with a look of pure, cold victory.

“Allow me to correct your ignorance,” Leander said, his voice rising so that every person in the hallway could hear him. “Everyone, meet my sister. The lost daughter of the Valerius line and the one and only Princess of the Astral Lune Pack—Lyra Valerius.”

The shock that hit Alaric was physical. It felt like the floor had been ripped out from under him. He looked at Lyra—the girl he had mocked, the woman he had discarded, the 'commoner' he had left to die—and realized that the power dynamic had not just shifted. It had been annihilated.

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of Selene’s choked, terrified gasp.
