PROLOGUE
[POV: Daphne]
The biting, damp chill of the subterranean cells beneath the Sterling stronghold gnawed at Daphne’s bones. It was a freezing reality that stood in stark contrast to the sun-drenched marble corridors she had walked as the Princess of Mercer merely a week ago. Back then, her world had been spun from gold and subjugation, built upon the broken backs of the very people whose kingdom now served as her prison.
A heavy, rusted iron door groaned upon its hinges, shattering the silence of the dungeon. It did not swing open with the fanfare of royal heralds, but yielded to the shove of a towering figure.
King Leonidas of Sterling.
The man who had spent ten grueling years chained like an animal under her father’s whip. Ten years in the sulphur pits of Mercer had not broken him; they had forged him into a leviathan of lean, coiled muscle and jagged, silvery scars. Even draped in the dark velvet cloak of a conqueror, Leonidas carried the feral, unyielding aura of the fighting pits. A thick, cruel scar mapped its way across his cheekbone—a souvenir from King Conrad’s lash.
He did not speak. He stalked into her cell with the predatory grace of a panther, letting the oppressive silence crush whatever fragile defiance Daphne had managed to scrape together. His eyes, a glacial blue, locked onto her huddled form. There was no flicker of lust in those icy depths. There was only an abyss of hatred. Hatred so pure and cold it seemed to lower the temperature of the air around them.
“Strip.” The command was soft, lacking inflection, yet it vibrated through the stones with lethal authority.
Daphne’s muscles protested, stiff and aching from days huddled on the freezing flagstones in her cheap burlap tunic. She forced her chin upward. The blood of monarchs flowed in her veins; her father had trained her to rule, not to cower.
“Please—” the word scraped past her cracked lips, a desperate plea born of terror. It was a fatal mistake.
Leonidas closed the distance in two strides. His heavy, calloused hand shot out, plunging into the tangled silk of her pale blonde hair. With a sharp downward yank, he forced her head back, exposing the fragile line of her throat to the freezing draft. Pain flared from her scalp to her neck, forcing a choked gasp from her lips. She bit her lower lip so hard she tasted the metallic tang of copper, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a scream.
“You either strip,” his voice brushed her ear, devoid of empathy, “or I call the guards to assist you.”
Panic clawed at her throat. Her trembling hands flew to the rough knot at the collar of her tunic. Her fingers fumbled uselessly against the coarse fabric, her breaths coming in short, erratic bursts. When she managed to untie it, she let the abrasive garment slide down her shivering shoulders, pooling in the dirt at her feet. She stood naked, the dungeon draft biting at her exposed flesh.
She curled her hands into tight fists. Tonight, she would lose everything. The sanctity of her body, the remnants of her pride, everything would be taken by the coldest, most ruthless man to ever walk the continent. But she would bear the humiliation with the dignity of a Mercer.
“Get on the bed.”
It wasn't a bed. It was a slab of rotting wood tucked into the corner. She moved toward it on trembling legs, her mind detaching from the horror of her reality.
CHAPTER ONE
[POV: Daphne]
For seven agonizing days, the four moss-slicked walls of the dungeon had been Daphne’s entire universe. In the darkness, her mind played cruel tricks, replaying the exact moment her kingdom fell. She remembered the deafening roar of the Sterling rebellion, the smell of burning tapestries, and the horrifying crunch of her father’s skull yielding beneath Leonidas’s iron boot.
She remembered the moment Leonidas had waded through the blood of her royal guard, his eyes finding hers across the throne room. He didn’t sprint. He stalked toward her, a rusted slaver’s collar dangling from his scarred fist—the very collar he had worn for a decade. With a swift motion, he had snapped the heavy metal around her delicate neck, sealing her fate. *“My property,”* he had declared, his voice a low rumble holding promises of suffering. *“I will pay you in spades—everything you and your father ever did to me.”*
A sharp clanking snapped her back to the freezing reality of the present. The heavy iron door swung open, and the flickering light of a torch bled into her cell.
A guard named Cedric—a mountain of a man who looked at her as if she were a piece of rotting meat—stepped inside. He carelessly tossed a wooden tray onto the dirt floor. A stale crust of bread and murky water splashed over the sides.
“Here’s your slop, *Priiiincess*,” Cedric drawled, stretching the title out into a venomous insult. The disgust radiating from the man was palpable.
Daphne’s stomach cramped. It had been nearly twenty-four hours since she had last eaten. She did not look at the slop. She refused to give him the satisfaction. Instead, she raised her chin, meeting Cedric’s glare with the haughty, unbreakable defiance that had once made the lords of Mercer tremble.
Cedric spat on the floor near her bare feet. “The King will be here in a few hours. Try to make yourself look presentable for your master.” The word *master* hung in the damp air like a curse before he turned and slammed the door shut, throwing the locking bolt into place.
Fear, cold and paralyzing, slid down her spine. The word echoed in her mind. *Master.*
Two hours later, the scrape of boots announced the arrival she had been dreading.
“The King has arr—” a guard began from outside.
“Do not announce me,” came the chillingly even reply. It was a voice devoid of ego, a voice that belonged to a man who no longer felt the need to prove his dominance. He simply *was* dominance.
The door opened with a heavy groaning sound. Only Leonidas entered, his footfalls impossibly silent for a man of his size.
The cavernous cell shrank. He stood there, studying her with an analytical, detached loathing. Daphne stared back, forcing the raging hatred she felt for him into her gaze. He had destroyed her family. He had taken her kingdom. She hated him with every fiber of her being.
But Leonidas’s hatred was deeper. It was an oceanic abyss filled drop by drop over a decade of torture. He closed the distance between them, stooping slightly. His hand shot out, grabbing a fistful of her hair once more, twisting his wrist to force her face upward. The pain was sharp and searing.
“When I enter this cell,” the King whispered, his tone conversational yet terrifying, “you will address me. You do not just sit like a coward, or I will punish you. I would love nothing more than an excuse to punish you.” His icy blue eyes flashed with a dangerous dark light.
Daphne swallowed the lump of terror lodged in her throat. She hated him, yes, but Mercer training had not prepared her for physical pain. She had an overwhelming aversion to suffering.
“Yes... my king,” she breathed out, her voice barely a whisper.
A flash of disgust distorted his scarred features. His free hand descended, brushing callously against her thin, ruined shift. His rough fingers found her breast, pinching the sensitive peak with a visceral twist.
Daphne screeched, a shockwave of pain reverberating through her chest. She automatically clawed at his wrist, but his arm was like iron.
“I am not your king,” he stated softly, twisting the tender flesh harder. Tears of pain welled in her eyes. “I am a king to my people. You are not my people. You are my slave. My property.”
“Yes! Yes!” she sobbed out, unable to bear the searing ache in her breast. “Please, just let go!”
He pinched even harder, observing her pain like a scientist studying an insect. “Yes... what?”
“Yes, M-Master!” The word tore itself from her throat, coated in humiliation and angry, hot tears.
He released her, stepping back as if her touch contaminated him. Without warning, his large hand hooked into the neckline of her fragile shift. With a harsh rip, he tore the garment in two, exposing her shivering, naked torso to the biting air and his unfeeling gaze.
Tears of humiliation choked Daphne. Her hands flew down, trembling as she grabbed the ragged remains of her skirt, desperately fighting the biological urge to cover her exposed breasts.
Leonidas didn’t blink. He showed no signs of arousal. No lust. He looked at her naked body the way one looks at a newly acquired piece of cattle. “Stand.”
Her legs felt like jelly, but she managed to push herself up, staring at the dirt floor through a blur of tears.
“Cedric!” Leonidas barked.
Daphne froze. She instinctively tried to flinch backward into the shadows to hide her nudity, but Leonidas’s hand clamped around her waist, anchoring her in the torchlight.
The heavy iron door groaned open, and Cedric stepped inside. “Your Highness?”
“Take a good look at this slave, Cedric,” the King commanded, his voice devoid of warmth. “Do you like what you see?”
Cedric’s eyes raked over Daphne’s exposed, trembling form. The raw, predatory lust that blanketed his heavy features made Daphne nauseous. She wanted the ground to split open and swallow her whole. But she forced herself to stand tall, refusing to whimper. She glared right back into Cedric’s hungry eyes.
“Can I touch?” Cedric asked, his voice thick with eagerness. He looked to the King, and Daphne noticed something curious in the guard's gaze. It wasn’t just loyalty. It was an ingrained, almost broken form of worship.
“Tell the servants to bathe my slave once I am done here,” Leonidas ignored the request smoothly. “Clean the filth off her. Have her brought to my chambers in three hours.”
Cedric nodded, his eyes lingering on Daphne’s chest before he backed out of the cell.
Leonidas turned back to her. “I will hurt you in ways that will make you crave physical pain,” he promised, his voice devoid of theatrical villainy. It was merely a factual statement. “I will tear apart everything you thought you were. I will share you with the hounds if I please, and I will reduce you to the most obedient dog in Sterling.”
The metallic taste of terror flooded Daphne’s mouth, but her Mercer pride flared. “You can never break me, you monster!” the words tore themselves from her throat before she could filter them.
The King didn't scream. He didn't hit her. He calmly grabbed the heavy iron chain attached to her collar and yanked it so hard her feet nearly left the ground. Daphne gagged, choking on the unforgiving metal crushing against her windpipe.
“Oh, I love seeing fire in you,” Leonidas whispered against her cheek, the scent of leather and cold steel wrapping around her. “Because quenching it is going to be my favorite pastime. Your training begins tonight. In my bed.”
He released the chain, letting her collapse into a coughing, gasping heap on the floor, and stalked out into the dark.
