Chapter 4: The Scent of Salvation
Leonardo POV
The stench of fear rolling off Alpha Brandon was almost as nauseating as his pathetic, sycophantic smile.
I stood in the center of the Crimson Crescent’s grand hall, completely suffocated by the weakness surrounding me. For exactly two centuries, the Obsidian Fang pack had ruled the North, not through political begging, but through sheer, uncompromising brutality. Yet here I was, playing the role of a desperate suitor explicitly because my senile Pack Elders held an ancient, unyielding knife to my throat: *Produce a legitimate heir, or the bloodline dies.*
They conveniently ignored the catastrophic cost. The Curse. A dark, insidious venom deeply woven into my Alpha genetics that violently consumed the life of every single woman unfortunate enough to bear my mark within twelve moons. I wasn't here to find a Luna. I was here to purchase a sacrificial lamb, offered by a cowardly Alpha who valued a military treaty far above the life of his own pack member.
Brandon pointed toward the darkest corner of the hall. "There. The omega, Amelia."
I didn't want to look. Every time I looked at a prospective bride, I saw a walking corpse. But I slowly turned my head, fully expecting to see some ambitious, foolish noblewoman desperate for absolute power.
Instead, my gaze violently collided with a ghost.
She was incredibly tiny, swallowed entirely by a horrifyingly heavy, black mourning dress that highlighted the sickly, bruised pallor of her fragile skin. Her golden hair was matted, falling over wide, storm-cloud gray eyes that were hollowed out by profound, devastating trauma. She was physically trembling, her small hands clutching the heavy fabric as if bracing for a physical blow.
And then, it hit me.
It wasn't just a scent; it was a catastrophic cosmic event. A breathtakingly fierce, violently sweet fragrance of crushed apples, warm rain, and morning dew aggressively slammed into my senses, completely obliterating the stale air of the hall.
*‘MATE!’*
The deafening, ferocious roar of my inner wolf, Romeo, nearly dropped me to my knees. For twenty-seven years, my wolf had been a silent, calculating killer, deeply buried under the ice of my curse. In a microscopic fraction of a second, he violently shattered his cage, his eyes bleeding glowing gold in my mind, fiercely demanding absolute, unyielding possession of the broken, battered girl shivering in the corner.
My fated mate. The Goddess hadn't just cursed me; she possessed a brilliantly sick, twisted sense of humor. My true mate was the exact sacrificial lamb I had come to systematically condemn to death.
My heart hammered a violent, deafening rhythm against my ribs. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't look away from her terrified gray eyes. I desperately wanted to cross the room, to completely slaughter every single wolf who had dared to place those dark, sickening purple bruises on her delicate jaw, and then lock her away in my fortress where death itself couldn't reach her.
"I sincerely hope she will adequately serve the purpose," Brandon chuckled nervously, oblivious to the nuclear bomb detonating inside my soul. "She’s completely useless, but her womb functions."
The sheer, blinding white-hot rage that erupted inside me was terrifying. My claws instantly elongated, tearing directly through the thick leather of my gloves.
Before I could tear Brandon’s smug head clean off his shoulders, a screeching, venomous harpy stepped directly in front of my mate. Margaret. Brandon’s repulsive, power-hungry betrothed.
"Don't just stand there staring like an idiot, you worthless wretch!" Margaret hissed venomously, aggressively grabbing Amelia by her fragile, bruised arm and violently yanking her forward. Amelia stumbled, a tiny, pained gasp escaping her lips as her knees hit the hard marble. "Show some proper respect to your new master!"
The sound of my mate hitting the floor snapped the last, frayed thread of my legendary control.
The heavy, imposing chandeliers violently shattered above us as my Alpha aura exploded outward like a shockwave. Several Crimson Crescent warriors collapsed instantly, violently choking on their own terror as the sheer, agonizing pressure brought them to their knees.
"Take. Your. Hands. Off. Her."
My voice wasn't elevated, but it carried the dark, lethal promise of guaranteed slaughter.
Margaret froze instantly, her painted face draining completely of blood. She looked up at me, her eyes widening in absolute horror as the suffocating pressure physically crushed her chest. She immediately snatched her hand back as if it had been burned by hellfire.
I didn't walk; I stalked. I crossed the massive distance in three huge strides, entirely ignoring Margaret's pathetic existence, and stopped directly in front of Amelia. She was still on her knees, her small body violently trembling, entirely expecting me to finish whatever brutal punishment Margaret had started.
I slowly dropped to one knee, my massive, dark cloak enveloping her small frame, shielding her from the prying, terrified eyes of her former pack. I aggressively fought the primal urge to pull her directly into my chest. Instead, I carefully, painfully extended one massive, gloved hand.
"Get up," I commanded softly, my voice a deep, vibrating rumble meant entirely for her.
Amelia nervously looked at my giant hand, then slowly lifted her wide, misty gray eyes to mine. I saw the exact moment the realization hit her—she hadn't felt the mate pull because her bond with Brandon had just been brutally severed, leaving her wolf in a deep coma. She had no idea who I truly was to her.
"Tristan," I barked over my shoulder without breaking strict eye contact with my fragile mate. "We depart entirely in two minutes. If a single member of this pack breathes deeply in her direction before she is safely in my vehicle, comfortably burn this entire compound to the ground."
